Can someone explain why OS X’s Finder reports 700mb cds as 660? I found a way to work around this (here) and burn cds that are larger than 660, but it’s through the terminal, and involves creating an iso. What I really want is for the Finder to correctly recognize the size of a blank cd so that I can use the GUI.
If the Finder is just stupid like this, and i shouldn’t be using it to burn cds, are there free alternatives to it?
Update: I’m now using YuBurner as my burning software of choice. Seems to be working nicely.
I still want to kick OSX though. And I had so much trust in it. :(

I’m sure you could find an xwindows front end to a command line tool…
If you have trouble finding one let me know and I’ll take a look…
if you do find something let me know, I haven’t been burning stuff
with my mac yet…but I will be soon…

Upgrade to OS X 10.4, perhaps. I tried just now using 10.4, and it reported the CD as having 702.8MB free.

Thats like the DVDs, it says 4.7 and it really is 4.5 but I wish you good luck fixing everything.

“free alternatives” are important key words.

I’m using YuBurner now. didn’t look for anything for the command line stuff. although that’s a good idea since that one macosxhints thing did solve part of my problem…

Demand that Apple backport that feature to 10.3.9. You are a paying customer, after all.
