sure, it’s rude to them, but how is it “not cool” to you?
And they could just type a few commands and disable hotlinking on their servers if they wanted to. I’m pretty sure they’d rather people hotlinked with their original urls (free advertising for them!) rather than downloading and saving their copyrighted comics and images.
I haven’t seen any of Firefly yet, and I could take it or leave it before I saw the Serenity trailer. But now that I’ve seen the trailer, I’m really itching to see the series before September.
It saves their bandwidth. If you were linking to the page with the ads, it would be fine because ads = revenue. However just the image sucks up their bandwidth and they get no compensation.
Plus, the url is on the comic, I believe. Downloadind the image and uploading it to your own server would save them bandwidth and advertise for them at the same time.
Do you have any idea how much revenue PA pulls in? The type of servers they can afford? If hotlinking was a problem for them, they’d tell people to stop and stop allowing it.
I don’t hotlink to people’s personal graphics or sites that I know can’t handle it. (such as deviantart.)
Even tho, I’m kinda 50/50 on this issue. We had an issue here at work one time, where some “gurls” (aka: 14 year old LJ junkies who spell everything the “qyuuute” way) had used an image of a plumeria flower from one of our client’s websites in some LJ template.
So overnight, the template spread to some 20-odd journals and they pulled down 3GB of bandwidth. But after some minor tweaks the next morning when we found out what was happening, they weren’t getting any images from our server anymore :)
But yeah, I doubt the number of visitors to this page are going to pull enough bandwidth for them to go “Oh hey, who the fuck is this starladear6 person on LJ hotlinking our shit!? SEND THE FRUIT FUCKER!!!”
Side Note: Geeez, they really don’t compress their comic strips at all, 142k for that one!
